Read between the lines

Read Between the Lines features short pieces exposing media lies, government spin, and the general hypocrisy of the ruling class's mouthpieces.
Have you caught the bourgeois press bending the truth, or spreading outright lies, to suit their agenda?
Have you spotted a public figure using euphemism, double-speak, and evasion to cover their backsides? Let us know!

Letter

A letter should cover something topical you've seen in the news, or something that has happened in your own life, that reveals the reality of capitalism or motivates you to fight.
Your letter can be serious or funny in tone, include statistics or not, but the main thing is to speak from the heart. It doesn't need to be a masterpiece, so long as you make an observation.
Keep it short and sweet. This isn't a full article, and it doesn't need to provide a full programme or analysis.

Bastard boss of the week

Getting treated like a slave? Do you or your colleagues dread meeting with 'the boss'? Does it feel like your managers live in another world? We want to know!
Tell us about your workplace tyrants, and why you won't let the bastards keep you down! You can also send us stories about out-of-touch executives, greedy CEOs and ruthless owners, particularly ones you've (unfortunately) become acquainted with.
Include plenty of details, but be sure not to include anything which might identify you and your colleagues if you want to remain anonymous.

Broken Britain

Doesn't it feel like everything's falling apart? Trains are cancelled left, right, and centre; it's impossible to get an NHS appointment; and the high street looks like a ghost town.
For our ‘Broken Britain’ column, we want to hear your experiences of the crisis of British capitalism, whether it's from the perspective of a worker in a broken industry, or just a pissed-off member of the public.
How does this make you feel? And does this fill you with resolve to put this dying system out of its misery?

Party building

Building the party features reports on recruitment, branch-building, education, selling the paper, and any other branch activity.
Your report should highlight and celebrate your successes, but crucially it should explain how you achieved them, and the problems you faced.
Try not to get too sucked into secondary details. Draw out the general lessons that will help other branches and cells in a similar situation.

Industrial front

Our 'Industrial front' pages feature reports from the workplace and the trade union movement. Are you on strike? Has your boss been withholding wages? Are you trying to unionise your workplace? Whatever it is, we want to hear from the frontlines of the class struggle!
Try to include quotes and opinions from your workmates. You can use the report as an opportunity to interview and discuss with them, and also tell them about The Communist.
There's no need to include every bit of detail: try and stick to the main issues and what our readers need to know!

Review / 'Readers recommend'

A review can discuss a piece of art, literature, or culture (e.g. books, films, TV shows, exhibitions, plays, etc.).
You can provide context and include relevant details about the style and form, but the key is to draw out the political content.
You don't need to say everything there is to say. A review can be as brief as 'I watched this film and I would/wouldn't recommend it because XYZ'.
Readers recommend is for short (e.g. one or two paragraph) recommendations of a political book, long article, podcast, etc.

Day in the life

Show us what life is really like for workers in your position: anecdotes, details and examples of what you have to deal with are very welcome!
A few key points, well told, are worth ten points that have been rushed through. Don’t overload your piece with detail, but give us the best examples of what your work life is like.
Most importantly: how does all this affect you? How do you and your workmates feel at the end of the day? We don’t want dry analysis, but real insight - our readers will recognise their own struggles in yours, that way!

Them and us

Them and Us should be a short piece of agitation which exposes a particular horror or excess of capitalism, and the gaping divide between the haves and have-nots.
Make it lively, witty, and angry! Ridicule the rich and their system; rail against the misery of the poor.
Examples could include: police misconduct, corruption scandals, white collar crime, the luxury lifestyles of the rich, etc.
You don't need to put forward a full programme of socialist revolution. Although you could mention a relevant demand at the end.

Cartoon

As with Them and Us, your cartoon should aim to ridicule the rich, expose an injustice of capitalism, and reveal the hypocrisy of the ruling class.
Any illustration style is welcome - hand-drawn and digital.
Keep it simple. One or two panels is best, and make sure the imagery is clear and easy to understand at a glance.

Word on the street

Word on the street is the place for quotes and snippets of conversations that we've had while out selling The Communist, or while chatting to colleagues, friends, and family.
We want to hear ordinary people's impressions and thoughts about political events, the state of society, and the ideas we put forward.
Please include any information about the people themselves, i.e. were they a worker, school student, shopkeeper, activist, etc.

Do you have a question about Marxism or current events? Has someone asked you a question that you haven't been able to answer?
Have you come across a challenge while building your branch / district that you want advice with?
Ask The Communist, and our editors will shed some light on your query.

Whether it was a political event, a book, or another personal experience, let us know why you became a communist!
In particular, what was it that drew you to joining the Revolutionary Communist Party, and why should other communists do the same?

Under the bonnet

Sick of capitalism, but not sure how it works? Want to understand how the system is screwing you over?
Seen propaganda in the bourgeois news that’s got your head scratching? Been asked an economics question yourself, but you’re not sure how to tackle it?
Ask us your question, and we can peer under the bonnet and expose what’s really going on.

Tell the truth

Are you taught flagrant lies and capitalist propaganda at school or university?
Do you want to uncover the truth?
Expose the lies we are taught and explain what really happened .

Poetry

A poem can be written in any form, although longer forms of poetry are unlikely to make it into the print paper due to space
You can reflect on any element of the world around us in your poem. You can draw from your own experiences, or from things you hear from friends and family, or what you see in the news
You don't need to explicitly call for revolution; a good poem can inspire that conclusion on its own
